Light Collimation Array

A prototype lighting system that uses an array of retroreflectors to create collimated light, producing a closer approximation of natural daylight. Particles suspended in an epoxy medium create a “blue sky” effect through Rayleigh scattering.

Design

Individual reflector size and shape was determined to maximize light intensity whilst reducing beam divergence. Reflectors were then modeled into an array, 3d printed, and supporting structure and surface mounted LED components were added. Particles of titanium dioxide powder dye were added to epoxy and poured in a leveled layer on top of the panel.

Impact

Prototype successfully mimicked sunlight in collimation and rayleigh scattering. Its ability is comparable to existing “artificial skylight” technologies, though it boasts a far better form factor, and would be more easily mounted in households. The technology could help individuals suffering from seasonal affective disorder and for making aesthetic lighting solutions
